ORANGUTAN PROJECT

Orangutan Project Sdn Bhd is a company offering volunteering and tourism opportunities with endangered and protected wildlife of Borneo, including of course, the magnificent orangutan

Company Overview

We are proud to present a model of true eco-tourism, where funds generated by the volunteers and tourists that we work with are spent directly on our conservation and animal welfare work at the centres and in the areas that we are based.

Description

There is no contact with orangutan on our projects. Excessive contact with lots of different people not only puts the orang's health at serious risk but also habituates them massively to people and our behaviour. In rehabilitation centres, this kind of habituation can be hugely problematic as we are obviously trying to convince them to like the jungle rather than humans.

General information

Anybody can help the cause of endangered animals – the truth is most people want some level of recognition or reward for doing so. Our Western team is simply willing to help, and to do whatever is necessary for progression of our projects. They are making sacrifices every day to be on Borneo fulfilling these roles, and they are making a difference.

INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL RESCUE

Widespread destruction of the rainforest and the illegal trade in primates in Indonesia inflict terrible suffering on animals that are caught from the wild to be killed for bushmeat or sold as pets. They also pose the threat of extinction to some endangered species. International Animal Rescue's team in Indonesia specialises in rescuing and rehabilitating orangutans, macaques and slow lorises and releasing them back into protected areas in the wild.

For one species in Indonesia -

the orangutan - the situation could not be more critical. The survival of the entire species is under serious threat, with individual animals suffering and dying at a terrifying rate because of the systematic destruction of the rainforest, particularly in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo.

Our team is working in West Kalimantan to rescue and care for
an increasing number of
orangutans - some only babies whose mothers have died trying to protect them, others full-grown adults that have spent years living in loneliness and squalor, chained up or imprisoned behind the bars of tiny cages.
